Ahada Bereavement Counselling

Ahada Bereavement Counselling was founded over twenty years ago to provide bereavement support for the members of four local synagogues in Redbridge. It is now an independent registered charity serving the Jewish and local communities in Redbridge, neighbouring boroughs and Harlow; telephone counselling support is available for outlying areas such as Southend, Westcliff, Chelmsford and Colchester.

Ahada clients are bereaved male and female Jewish adults; however a non-Jewish partner may also receive support.

Ahada volunteer counsellors and clients come from across the spectrum of Judaism, irrespective of synagogue affiliation or no affiliation at all, and we are proud of the role we are playing in building bridges of understanding and respect within the Jewish and wider community.

As a prospective volunteer you will take part in Ahada’s in-house training programme and on your successful completion of the course you may be accepted as an Ahada volunteer counsellor. In view of the responsible and confidential nature of the work and because bereaved clients are vulnerable you will be required to obtain a standard CRB disclosure before you can see clients. Details will be kept strictly confidential.

Group supervision meetings are held once a month in the Seminar Room at South West Essex & Settlement Reform Synagogue, Oaks Lane, Newbury Park. Your Supervisor will be also available to you should you need help between the meetings.

Counselling sessions, which are one-to-one, last an hour and are held at regular intervals, initially weekly, in the client’s home or in a mutually agreed suitable venue, e.g. a synagogue. You will not be expected to see more than one client at a time.

The number of sessions required is dependent upon the needs of the client and your Supervisor will always give support when it is time to make the decision to work towards an ending of counselling. The client is always left with the understanding that they can contact Ahada any time in the future should the need arise, although there can be no guarantee that they will be able to see the same counsellor.

Ahada has a dedicated referral telephone line which ensures privacy. Clients usually self-refer by calling the referral ‘phone number: 07758 727328. Provided the client is in agreement referrals may also be accepted from Rabbis, G.Ps, Social Workers or community organisations.
