At JVN we place on a daily basis a range of volunteers who all differ in age, gender, background and abilities. People who volunteer often derive huge feeling of wellbeing from this. This is particularly evident for those who require extra support in their volunteering.
However, unfortunately we find that people with disabilities are not as successful in building long term volunteer placements as able volunteers. The organisation in which the volunteer with extra support needs is placed often lack the time, experience and knowledge to provide the extra assistance required at the start of the volunteering. Some volunteers need help with finding the right opportunity and applying for a placement, some with finding their way to the organisation, and others with developing certain skills.
At JVN we understand very well that charities more often than not have the capacity to give the extra time and we have therefore created and trained a small group of some committed individuals who can mentor a person who would like to volunteer. This mentor will help to remove some barriers, will accompany the volunteer if needed and will support and act on any issues that may arise.
We provide this service to individuals who:
Let’s concentrate on ability rather than disability!
