Advocacy in Barnet

Advocacy in Barnet exists to provide free, independent and confidential advocacy services that enables and empowers people aged 50 and over to have their say, communicate their needs and make informed choices in obtaining community and health services in the way they want them.

Advocacy in Barnet provides varied advocacy services under ‘50 + Matters’ umbrella to older residents living in the London Borough of Barnet and in the surrounding boroughs.

'50 + Matters’ main aim is to improve older people’s emotional, physical and financial well-being.

Hospital advocacy service
50 + Matters provide advocacy services to older patients on wards and at the point of discharge at Royal Free, Edgware community and Finchley Memorial Hospitals. Advocates can support patients with moving into care homes, future care / end of life care plans, unhappy with hospital’s quality of care, financial matters and more. This project is currently funded by Santander Foundation.

Future care project
Future Care planners deliver awareness sessions on the ‘Importance of future care planning’ to Barnet, Brent, Haringey and Enfield community organisations and one to one sessions on how to complete Advance / Future Care Plan form. These services are not funded at the moment.

Financial advocacy
SAFE (support, advocacy and financial representation of the elderly) project provides support, advocacy and financial representation to older people living in the community, care and accessing health settings in the London Borough of Barnet. This project is funded by Lloyds Foundation Trust.

Issues that SAFE advocates can help with are preparation of Wills, applying for Power of Attorney, Financial debt management, opening bank accounts, liaising with banks, older people getting financially abused and more.

Care homes advocacy
Care home volunteer advocates provide weekly advocacy services to older people living in care homes in the London Borough of Barnet. This project has not been funded since January 2013.
