Board of Deputies of British Jews

The Board of Deputies of British Jews is the voice of the British Jewish community, the first port of call for Government, the media and others seeking to understand Jewish community interests and concerns.

For over 260 years our purpose has been to protect, support and defend the interests, religious rights and customs of Jews in the United Kingdom and to promote the development, needs, aspirations and above all the security of the Jewish community in Britain.

Our advocacy delivers tangible results. Our elected leadership is supported by a professional team without parallel in our community. The work of the Board of Deputies reaches those in positions of influence in towns and cities across the UK including those who have little exposure to the Jewish community. It is through tools such as the innovative ‘Jewish Manifesto’ series that we have been able to extend our reach further than ever across the whole of the UK.

The Board of Deputies defends the British Jewish community, speaks up for it, fights for it and protects its interests. The Board speaks for the entire community, talking to the Government, Opposition, other authorities, the media, faith groups and civil society organisations. The Board's credibility comes from its democracy – representing synagogues and organisations across the country – as well as by its funding model: we ask synagogue members to pay a modest annual Communal Contribution of £35.

The Board confronts antisemitism from wherever it originates, including mobilising political support for our students on university campuses.

The Board works hard to get Israel a fair hearing in the media and in Government - a pressing need in times of conflict; the Board campaigned to get terrorist groups like Hezbollah, Hamas and Hizb Ut-Tahrir proscribed.

Through the Board's school inspection service, Pikuach, we ensure high standards of Jewish education.

The Board defends Jewish interests and respect for Judaism across lifecycle events, defending Shechita, Brit Milah and ensuring Jewish traditions relating to deaths and burials.
