Meet the JVN team

The JVN Team is made up of nine professional staff members - eight based in the London office and one in Manchester - and four volunteers. You can find out more about each of them below.

Nicky Goldman

Chief Executive

Leonie Lewis MBE


With her professional background in the Jewish community, Leonie uses her vast experience to direct and coordinate the charity as well as striving to promote and create awareness of JVN. She enjoys promoting volunteering across the community and is an accomplished presenter. As the previous director of the Community Division of the United Synagogue, Leonie is accustomed to running large-scale events and activities. Leonie received an MBE in the 2018 New Year's Honours List for Services to the Jewish Community.

Katie Axelrod-Harash

Fundraising Manager

Katie started working at JVN after 5 years of fundraising and events at UJIA. As a mum to 2 young boys, she believes that everyone should be able to volunteer and really feels passionate about getting the name of JVN into the wider community and raising the funds needed to do fulfil our wonderful work.

Lia Bogod

Head of Charity Engagement and Volunteering

Lia brings to the JVN team a wealth of experience in the volunteer management sector. Whilst working as the volunteer co-ordinator for West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust and World Jewish Relief, she was active within the JVN Volunteer management steering group. Lia joined JVN 6 years ago as a senior member of staff. With a background in training consultancy Lia has developed numerous training programmes for volunteers and volunteer mangers. She has also developed the JVN kitemark for good practice in volunteer management and written JVN’s publication the Companion to Volunteering. Lia also runs the JVN Trustee Connection Service and works closely with JVN’s member charities giving them advice and support in volunteer management and trustee recruitment. Caroline Collins

Office and Finance Coordinator

Caroline started working at JVN in November 2016, following a successful career at Jewish Women's Aid (where she still works part-time) and WIZOuk. Consequently Caroline has vast experience of working in the Jewish charity sector and now assists JVN's volunteer department in vital areas of day-to-day work, alongside managing the finances. She is also a reguar volunteer on the PTA of Clore Shalom school.

Lesley Gordon

PA to Chief Executive / Events Coodinator

Lesley started working for JVN in May 2016 in the dual role of PA to Leonie Lewis MBE and Events Coordinator, which includes managing Leonie’s busy diary and coordinating the main events, including the JVN Volunteering Awards and Gala Dinner. Lesley has several years’ experience in the charity sector, having previously worked as the Office Manager at Resource, managing the client office and working extensively with volunteers and supervising the Volunteer Admin Team.  Lesley enjoys being part of the JVN team and values the work that we do.

Jo Masters

Training & Development Coordinator

Jo has recently started working with JVN to provide support for all Volunteer Managers and Coordinators in the community and is working with them to create centralised training programmes for all volunteers. A change in career took Jo into Volunteer Management when she joined Jewish Care where she managed the Karten Computer Centre. Working with a team of volunteers she set up a programme to teach computer skills to people with disabilities. After a year Jo moved into the Volunteers' Department at Jewish Care and managed a team of staff and volunteers who led on volunteer recruitment, training and development in an organisation that works with around 3000 volunteers. At JVN Jo is also responsible for the JVN Charter for Good Practice in Volunteer Management and the Kitemark scheme.

Rebecca Mickler

Volunteer Coordinator (Manchester)

Rebecca started at JVN as the Manchester Volunteer Coordinator at the beginning of 2018, matching volunteers with volunteering opportunities as well as organising events for Volunteer Managers and Volunteers. She has previously worked for an exhibition’s company organising the build of large scale exhibitions across the country as well as working for a fashion line managing the merchandising and distribution of large clothing contracts. Rebecca is currently a part of the 2018 UJIA Leadership programme that links young professionals with key voluntary leadership positions within the community. In her spare time, Rebecca writes and produces plays and sketches for independent theatre and radio companies.

Mike Silverstone

Volunteer Projects and Communications Manager

Mike originally started at JVN as an intern in September 2011. However, after completing his internship, a call-back for a job to expand JVN's youth work was too difficult for him to turn down. Mike has since become the Volunteer Development Manager, taking responsibility for connecting volunteers with suitable volunteering opportunities, the Ad Hoc Volunteering Squad and other projects. Mike is additionally responsible for writing many of JVN's reports and publications, and he also manages JVN's website content. He is an active member of the Barnet Multi Faith Forum and a local community band and a volunteer Schools speaker for the Three Faiths Forum. Hear about Mike in his own words:

Rachel Ucko

Volunteer and Charity Engagement Coordinator

Rachel began volunteering for JVN in March 2016 following a career in teaching, She was then employed as Engagement Coordinator. Rachel meets volunteers 1-to-1, guiding them through the website to help them find their perfect volunteering opportunity, and coordinates our activities in National Volunteers’ Week . She also meets with charities, explaining to them how to get the most out of the services JVN offers, manages our social media output and contributes to training for volunteers and charity professionals.

Volunteer Team


Mike Boda

IT Manager

Mike joined JVN as a volunteer to help with managing our website in 2015, after he took early retirement from a career in I.T. Management specialising in worldwide implementations of customer service, sales and marketing systems. Since then Mike has filled the role of the JVN I.T. Manager, overseeing the developments and analysing the performance of JVN’s website, mobile app and other systems. In addition to volunteering for JVN, Mike continues to volunteer for other charities and still works as a I.T. consultant.

Kathryn Finlay

Supported Volunteering Project Administrator

Rita Fischer

Volunteering Department Adminstrator

Rita has been volunteering at JVN since her retirement in 2012. She comes in to the office two mornings a week and contacts newly registered volunteers to find out if they need assistance in finding a suitable volunteering role. She also carries out various administration duties. Rita is a retired solicitor and has been a volunteer for several charities over the years. She is currently a member of the JC Singers who entertain residents in old age care homes and at friendship clubs.

Doreen Morris

Supported Volunteering Project Coordinator

Following retirement from full time work in education in the further education sector, Doreen decided it was now time to offer something back to the community. She is a qualified teacher but for the last 15 years or so was a senior manager at various colleges. She has always been very involved with her Shul, having been on two Boards and a number of committees.At JVN her main role is to coordinate the Supported Volunteering programme which, in collaboration with the London Borough of Barnet, supports and helps people with mental health issues or learning difficulties to find structure to their lives, build up their self-confidence and re-integrate into the community. She does this with the aid of mentors, who support the clients with finding a volunteering role. Dina Sinitsky

Office Assistant

Dina has been volunteering at JVN since late 2018. She comes in twice a week to help with administration. Dina has a graphic and web design diploma and is studying floristry and balloon art at Kapel Manor. She is using her time at JVN to gain experience and knowledge as she hopes to open her own businesses and charity one day.
