Registering as a volunteer can open up a whole new world of volunteering opportunities
My name is Paul Solomon, and I was born in Glasgow. After having had two daughters, we moved down to Sutton in 1982 to be closer to my wife’s parents. I thought the best way to get to know the Jewish people is to start going to Shul. I was not a great Shul-goer before, not in the way I am now.
The Treasurer at the time found out I was an accountant, so he got me onto the board. It's a terrible thing being an accountant, you know, because people are always trying to get you involved in committees. We raised money for the Shul through the South London Jewish Charities Committee. We were able to raise thousands with our brochures; it was absolutely fabulous.
"I think you’re never too busy to volunteer. I just find volunteering natural. We’re a small community, and when someone asks me to do something, I do it."
