Registering as a volunteer can open up a whole new world of volunteering opportunities
My name is Susan Malins, I'm a volunteer for Chai Cancer Care, and have been for the past 25 years. I know the feeling of what it's like to receive a cancer diagnosis, or to hear that somebody in your family has one.
I started at Chai Cancer Care, and I haven't looked back ever since. I've gone through various roles. At first, I was doing the helpline, which had its high points and low points, but I helped them along the way.
People ask me, “What's it like to be a volunteer at Chai?” I don't think you'd say it's happy, but it is so, so rewarding. It's just wonderful to see people receiving help there, which puts their minds at rest and helps them along the cancer journey. It can be heart-breaking at times, but I like to think that we are there to help them
"The reward is seeing people being helped. When people have had their session, they leave looking very much better. My reward is seeing them feeling better than when they enter the building."
