Trustee Development Programme Session 1: Strategic Thinking for Trustees

Wednesday 7th December 2022, 19:30-21:00
JVN and Lead present Session 1 of 4 aimed at trustees

This session will be taking place on Zoom.

Session 1:

Strategic Thinking for Trustees with Larry Shulman

It’s the end of a busy working day and you’ve got that Trustee meeting to go to tonight. You’re tired, you’re still in management mode and you just want to work as efficiently as possible. Can you remain focused on your role as a Trustee, and not as a manager? How do you ensure that you are keeping a strategic mindset as a Trustee as you do your work and not end up roving through the weeds? Have you found the right mix of being on the balcony and being on the dance floor?

In this session, Larry Shulman will use his experience of working with Boards and Executive Teams to enable you to reflect on these questions through 4 lenses;  (1) ‘How to switch off our autopilot’, (2) ‘How to avoid the traps of narrow thinking’, (3) ‘How to be clear on our purpose and role’ and (4) ‘How to engage with the Executive Team’.

Larry is a strategic leadership consultant and executive coach with over 30 years experience in senior roles in major blue-chip companies - Tesco and Coca-Cola - and consultancy and coaching assignments with major organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Larry’s clients include

  • NHS England
  • Medtronic
  • The JLC / Lead
  • The London School of Economics
  • The Association of Colleges
  • NHS Resolution
  • The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity
  • Macmillan Cancer Support

He is an Executive Coach to several senior leaders across the public, private and charitable sectors. Larry is accredited as a Senior Coaching Practitioner with the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC). Larry has an MBA with Distinction from Ashridge and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Larry is all about enabling shifts in people, teams and organisations. His strength is in asking leaders the challenging questions that get them to raise the bar.

He does his best work with forward-thinking leaders who are searching for strategies to not just meet but beat their organisational objectives. They realise they need to up their game, and they also recognise that they need to do some different thinking in a different space, with different influences.
