An introduction to the Charity Governance Code: What you need to know and how to use the Code to improve your charity's governance with Jo Coleman - Tuesday 19th January 2020, 5.30-6.45pm
Since its re-launch in June 2017, the Charity Governance Code has been promoted by the Charity Commission as the governance standard to which all charities should aspire. In this session, Jo will explain what the Code is, how it works, and how it might help you to improve the governance in your own organisation. The Code may be voluntary but charities can no longer afford to ignore it, and this clear and entertaining presentation will provide you with the guidance you need to move your organisation forward.
Safeguarding with Shelley Marsh - Tuesday 16th February 2021, 5.30pm - 7.00pm
Safeguarding is often focused on governance, policies and due diligence. This presentation will explore how high-quality safeguarding can lead to a dramatic, positive shift in organisational and communal culture. Safeguarding remains the key priority for the Charity Commission. This session will help participants to better understand the benefits that best practice in safeguarding can bring to organisations, communities and individuals. Safeguarding responsibilities ultimately sit with Trustees, and this session will highlight how safeguarding policies, procedures and implementation ensure Jewish communal charities create safer environments in the organisations they serve.
Essential Duties of a Trustee with Eva Abeles - Wednesday 10th March 2021, 6.30pm - 7.45pm
This session will provide participants with a deeper understanding of ‘The six essential duties of a trustee’, as set out in the Charity Commission’s Guidance CC3 “The Essential Trustee”. This session will consider:
- Ensuring your charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit
- Ensuring your charity complies with your charity’s governing document and the law
- Making sure your charity acts in its best interests
- Ensuring your charity is accountable for its actions
- Managing your charity’s resources responsibly
- Acting with reasonable care and skill
- Serious incident reporting
Understanding Budgets and Strategy with Cheryl Brodie - Tuesday 20th April 2021, 5.30pm - 7.00pm
The Charity Governance code requires a lot from a Trustee including ensuring the charity is effective in achieving its charitable purposes and agreed outcomes.
This interactive session provides an opportunity for participants to understand their organisations as a whole so they can ask the pertinent questions. Key themes include how organisations are financed, how they spend their money and how that relates to core purpose. It also includes what is a strategy, why is it important and who is responsible for it.
