The following online workshop has been designed to support volunteer managers to reflect on the unconscious biases that we all hold and the assumptions we sometimes make about others. It explores how these may impact on our interactions and strategies for recognising and counteracting bias in the workplace. This session will be run by Brenda Lewis from Brenda Lewis Consultancy & Training Ltd. Brenda Lewis has substantial experience as an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion specialist and has worked with a variety of organisations in the voluntary, public and private sectors.
Objectives:
As a result of the workshop you will gain an understanding of: -
· Unconscious bias in the workplace, what it is and, why it matters
· Types of bias
· Where they come from and how they might affect your interactions with others
· How to mitigate natural bias in your interactions
Topics to be covered:
· Understanding bias – What is the difference between bias, prejudice, and stereotyping? Why do we do it and can it be avoided?
· Types of bias – An exploration of the origins of unconscious bias and the various types of bias.
· How unconscious bias can affect decision making in the workplace e.g., in meetings, during recruitment and when managing others.
· Ways to assess and challenge our own biases, consciously break habits, and do things differently and more inclusively.
