Volunteering: Can it Improve your Mental Health?

Tuesday 26th January 2016

It has been long established that volunteering has the power to improve the well-being of the volunteer. However, more recently, those in the medical profession have proposed prescribing volunteering as an alternative to medicine for some patients with mental illnesses.

An article from The Guardian outlines the benefits that volunteering could have for your mental health.

JVN has launched a pilot scheme recently with NHS GP's practices in North London for "social presciribing".

It was an initiative by a JVN volunteer who worked tirelessly to establish working relationships with GPs and mental health organisations to refer people with mild depression to volunteering.

Referrals are coming through and patients are helped on a one to one basis to find a suitable volunteering role.

JVN can also assign a mentor  to the volunteer for support to make the volunteering a success.
