Volunteering in retirement

You have time now. Charities need what you know.

Whether you retired last month or ten years ago, a working life leaves you with skills, judgement and experience that charities find hard to replace. JVN can help you find a role with Jewish and wider sector charities that makes good use of them.

Where to start

Four ways in. Pick whichever suits how ready you feel.

A few questions worth sitting with

There are no right answers. A rough idea is enough to recognise the right role when you see it.

  • What did you enjoy most about your working life?

The people, the problem-solving, the organising, the craft?

  • What would you be happy never to do again?

Leaving some things behind is allowed.

  • Do you want to be with people, or behind the scenes?

Both are equally useful to a charity.

  • How much time can you give across a whole year?

Think about travel, family and the other things you have planned.

What you could do

Some people want to keep using their professional skills. Others want to try something completely different. Both are welcome.

Share your professional skills

Small charities often cannot afford the expertise you spent a career building.

Finance, HR, legal, marketing, IT, fundraising

Mentor someone

Pass on what you have learned to someone at the start of their path.

Young people, job seekers, charity staff, reading support

Spend time with people

For someone living alone, a friendly and reliable visitor makes a real difference.

Befriending, lunch clubs, drop-ins, driving

Help from home

Useful if you travel, care for someone, or simply prefer your own desk.

Telephone befriending, admin, research, online mentoring

Lend a hand at events

One-off and occasional roles, with no long-term commitment.

Community events, fundraising days, seasonal appeals

Help lead a charity

Bring your judgement to the decisions that shape an organisation.

Trustee, governor and committee roles

Trustee and leadership roles

Give as much or as little as suits you

Retirement rarely means an empty diary. Every amount of time is useful, as long as it is one you can keep up.

  • An hour a week

A regular phone call to someone living alone, or reading with a child.

  • A day a month

Helping at a lunch club, a food bank or a community centre.

  • A short project

Reviewing a charity's finances, policies or website, then stepping back.

  • A seat on a board

Joining as a trustee, often meeting four to six times a year.

Trustees and leadership

Many charities are looking for experienced people to join their boards

Trustees are responsible for a charity's direction, its finances and the people it serves. If you have managed budgets, people or risk, you already understand much of what the role involves.

  • Search by your skills

Filter roles by expertise such as finance, legal or marketing, and by location and charity.

  • New to being a trustee?

Our Trustee Development Programme, run in partnership with Lead JLC, covers governance, fundraising and budgeting, and ends with a chance to meet charities looking for trustees.

  • Not sure where to begin?

Talk it through with our team before you apply.

Things people often ask us

Do I need any particular experience?

No. Some roles ask for specific skills, and each listing says so. Many simply need someone reliable and kind, and charities provide training where it is needed.

Can I volunteer for just a few hours a month?

Yes. Many roles are flexible or one-off. Each listing shows the time involved, and our Volunteer Broker can help you find something that fits around the rest of your life.

I have never volunteered before. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Plenty of people start volunteering in retirement. If you are unsure where to begin, a message to our Volunteer Broker is a good first step.

I don't live near London or Manchester. Can I still help?

Yes. Many roles can be done from home by phone or online, and charities post opportunities from across the country.

Does it cost anything?

No. Searching for roles, the Weekly Digest and our Volunteer Broker are all free.

What if a role turns out not to suit me?

That is fine. Let the charity know, and get in touch with us if you would like help finding something better suited.
