Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care
Supporting Hands volunteer
We’re looking for Supporting Hands Volunteers to offer practical help and emotional support to patients being cared for in their own homes.
What you’ll be doing:
• Visiting patients at home to offer companionship and conversation
• Helping with light practical tasks — making a cuppa, running errands, or just sitting quietly
• Supporting families and carers with your presence and empathy
• Being a gentle, caring part of someone’s day
For this role you will need access to your own transport as our patients can be spread across a relatively wide area and may live in places that are difficult to get to by public transport
What difference you will make
The service was set up in 2017 to offer companionship and practical help to people with life limiting illness. By supporting patients, volunteers help to free up valuable nursing time and offer desperately needed respite to carers looking after loved ones with life-limiting illness.
What additional skills or experience you should have
No clinical experience needed — just warmth, reliability, and a willingness to help. We’ll give you full training and ongoing support so you feel confident and valued.
After an initial chat, you will attend our 1 day training course. If you decide to go ahead with the role, we ask you to fill in an online application form (we can help you with this), and we take up one personal reference. We do a DBS (Criminal record) check for this role, and also do some driving checks so that you are set up to take your client out in your car if necessary.
What training we will provide for you
We have a 1-day training course which is held in our office in Tring, every couple of months, and we ask you to read our Volunteer training book. After that, there is some bolt-on training from our Supporting Hands lead. Our Supporting Hands volunteers meet every 6 weeks as a group to offer peer support and for further training opportunities.
