Jewish Blind & Disabled
Volunteer Needed to Help with a Yiddish Class – Mill Hill East
We are looking for a volunteer to help with a Yiddish class for tenants at our building in Mill Hill East. The aim is to bring tenants together to explore and enjoy the Yiddish language, including its words, phrases, expressions and rich cultural history.
The sessions would provide an opportunity for tenants to share their knowledge, learn new things and reminisce about the language and its place in Jewish life and culture.
The volunteer would help facilitate discussions, introduce interesting words and phrases, and encourage tenants to participate and share their own experiences and memories.
You do not need to be fluent in Yiddish or have previous teaching experience. We are simply looking for someone who has an interest in the language and its history, enjoys chatting with others and would be happy to help create a fun, relaxed and engaging environment in which tenants can explore Yiddish together.
Application process (application form, references etc.) and a DBS check will be required before volunteering can commence. JBD will apply for the DBS on the volunteer's behalf.
What difference you will make
• Provide tenants with an enjoyable and stimulating social activity centred around the Yiddish language and Jewish culture
• Help tenants explore and share their knowledge, memories and experiences of Yiddish
• Encourage conversation, learning and connections between tenants
• Help preserve an appreciation of the Yiddish language and its cultural heritage
• Create a welcoming environment where tenants can have fun, learn something new and enjoy spending time together
What additional skills or experience you should have
• An interest in the Yiddish language, its expressions and cultural history
• Some familiarity with Yiddish words and phrases would be helpful, but fluency is not required
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• A friendly, approachable and enthusiastic manner
• The ability to encourage conversation and make sessions enjoyable and inclusive
Previous teaching or group facilitation experience would be beneficial but is not essential.
What training we will provide for you
Volunteers are provided with an induction to volunteering with Jewish Blind & Disabled, along with any support needed from our Community Engagement team.
What you will get out of volunteering for us
• The opportunity to share your interest in Yiddish and Jewish cultural heritage with others
• The satisfaction of helping tenants enjoy a stimulating and sociable activity
• The opportunity to meet new people, share knowledge and experiences, and give back to the community
