Adam Gross Shares his experiences as intern for JVN

April 26, 2017

I applied for the internship at JVN as I am on my gap year and wanted to spend some of my time volunteering to make a difference to the community.

In addition to this I thought it would teach me skills to enable me to grow in areas such as confidence, creative thinking and problem solving. I thought it was a great opportunity to improve my CV and gain an understanding of the office environment.

I was very nervous at first, especially on my first day. Nevertheless I persisted and I can honestly say I feel more confident now due to this opportunity. I have been encouraged to answer the telephone, work on the website and go out of my comfort zone, experiences for which I am grateful for.

In one of the reviews I had with my line manager, I was asked which skills I would like to develop. I asked to spend some time working on the JVN website, in particular its control management system (CMS).

At first it was challenging because I had never done any work on a website before. Over time, with explanations and ‘learning by doing’, I became more efficient and confident with the work.

One aspect of the internship that I found particularly beneficial was gaining experience in the office environment. Additionally I have enjoyed the good feeling that comes with doing a voluntary internship for a charity. I feel that my contribution made a positive difference.

I believe that if you have some spare time on your hands, an internship is a very worthwhile, valuable and rewarding thing to do. It is a great way to add to your CV and learn new skills.

Looking back, I am pleased that I had the opportunity of this internship as I have developed so many skills.  It is an experience that I would highly recommend.
