Venturing into Volunteering
This guest blog is written by Claire Cantor. She writes about her new-found love for volunteering and how JVN has helped her find roles she finds really fulfilling and worthwhile.
A few months ago I decided to make some changes to my working life.
I have been a self-employed nutritionist for the past six years, writing and running workshops on healthy eating for diverse groups of people – children, the elderly, menopausal women, the blind. I loved it and it was enormously satisfying. But it was time for change.
I had always loved writing, with a degree in English and Drama and a professional background in advertising and fundraising, and I wondered whether I may launch myself into the written word through some voluntary work. Perhaps it was just a dream, but it was worth a try.
I contacted JVN, and had a long conversation with Lia Bogod – she was extremely helpful and attentive to my needs and promised to be in touch if anything cropped up at her end.
Within days, an emailed bounced into my inbox.
United Synagogue Women’s online magazine, Women’s View, was looking for a new editor. After an in-depth interview with the US team, and a chance for them to view my blog and writing, I was hired. Since May I have edited and prefaced 14 items for Women’s View. I have surprised myself! I have gained an enormous amount of confidence in my writing and professional ability and the US Women’s Team have been delighted. What more could I hope for?
I then realised that I was capable of much, much more.
I contacted Hadassah UK , who were looking help with some writing projects. A few months down the line, I have assisted Hadassah with their marketing brochures, Rosh Hashanah mailshot, various fundraising letters and am now consulting for them on fundraising, planning and strategy, as well as continuing to support the team with writing assignments. It is truly satisfying, enjoyable and refreshing to be working with both Hadassah and US Women on a voluntary level.
This new-found passion inspired me to approach Chai Cancer Care with the idea of producing a fundraising cookbook for them. This project is now underway.
Volunteering has certainly opened new avenues for me. It has helped me find new direction and meaning in my working life. I encourage you to take a chance, and let your dreams come to life.
