JVN Volunteering Profiles – Camp Simcha's Daniel Gillis
One the busiest JVN volunteer organisations is Camp Simcha. Therefore, we were thrilled that Daniel Gills, services co-ordinator, took some time out his schedule to tell us more about the remarkable work Camp Simcha does.
Daniel, what’s Camp Simcha all about?
Camp Simcha’s aim is to improve the quality of life for children with Cancer and life threatening illnesses. Our mission is that no Jewish child will suffer without us.
How long have you been working there?
I have now been working at Camp Simcha since I moved down from London in September 2010.
How many volunteers are currently working with you?
I am working with approximately 200 volunteers from London, Manchester and Gateshead.
What volunteering opportunities does Camp Simcha have to offer?
We have regular volunteering opportunities in our Big Brother/Big Sister program although many of these vacancies are now full. We also have hospital clowning, toy drives, ‘Keshet’ (our Summer day-scheme) balloon delivering and many more opportunities which are on our website.
Profile wise, is there a certain ‘type’ of volunteer at Camp Simcha?
We have got different opportunities for all ages
What is the best part of your day?
The WHOLE day!!
Tell us about your plans for 2011.
We have got outings taking place in London, Manchester and Gateshead. We are sending some children from Camp Simcha UK to USA for Camp there. We will be holding our annual 3 day retreats, Summer schemes and so much more!!
