I love design. Objects, buildings, clothes, jewelry, stationary, nature, food, you name it. If it’s colourful, beautifully placed, smart, creative and puts a smile on my face – I LOVE it!

I am currently looking for a job. You know how it feels. Sending your CV everywhere with the hope that someone will actually read it. Spreading my wings and thinking outside of the box to explore every opportunity or area I could do well in.

I did all sorts of things. A course in fashion design (did I mention I love beautiful things?).    I took a course in coaching, as I love helping people. I spent time at my kids’ school – I had to understand what they do to make my kids LOVE school so much (they get upset when school closes down for the holidays!).  I’ve learnt so much about their creative ways of teaching the children to love learning – I think this is quite rare! I go to Zumba to keep a clear mind and I read motivational books to keep positive.

So what’s all this got to do with volunteering, I hear you ask.  Well, I want to get a job doing something I love. My specialty is Branding and Marketing. I’d like to be around inspirational positive people. I’d like to put a smile on people’s faces, I’d like to learn something new, I’d like to get back in the game. I should probably mention I’m a mum of three, I took a career break three years ago to look after my family and now I’m ready to go back to work. An organization called Resource has been very helpful (if you’re looking to go back to work call them now).  My advisors Melanie & Mandy suggested volunteering.

I wasn’t sure at first as I need the income, but as the traditional routes were not successful and I identified a gap in my CV I thought I’d give volunteering a try.  Learning something new and contributing to the community – what a great achievement. I didn’t know much about volunteering options so I had to do some research.

With the help of the wise old Internet and Resource recommendations I found JVN – a one stop shop for volunteers.  You register with your availability, interests and skills and they help you find a volunteering opportunity.

When I approached JVN they were so helpful and following a brief chat I discovered that they themselves were looking for an intern for social media, PR and Marketing. An informal meeting later and here I am – Yael Shahar – JVN’s new intern !

I never thought about volunteering and while I’m still looking for a paid job I have found exactly what was I was looking for – AMAZING positive inspiring people who are doing so much good. I’m learning something new and reading this will hopefully put a smile on your face, motivating you to carry on doing what you’re doing but adding one thing extra – volunteering! You never know where it will lead you. I can promise you one thing – it will make you feel good!!!
