The start of the centenary of World War One is upon us, a conflict that changed the world forever. The sacrifices made and service given across society will be reflected upon by people in the UK and far beyond. The impact of 1914-1918 is still evident today; war memorials stand guard in towns and villages and cities paying homage to those lost in war, and representing the communities they belonged to and those left to mourn them. Events will be taking place within your community, and research projects abound. Whether you are inspired to take part in an organised activity or to create your own, how will you Remember WW1?

Remember WW1 aims to inspire and support you to take part in active commemoration, by getting involved in local and voluntary activities in order to make a positive contribution to your community. Remember WW1 was founded by renowned author Clive Aslet and social entrepreneur John O’Brien, and is led by a broad consortium of partners. The campaign builds on John O’Brien’s highly successful 2012 project The Jubilee Hour, which asked individuals and groups to give 60 minutes of their time to recognise 60 years of public service from HM The Queen; the result was over 2 million hours pledged, recognised as the largest mobilisation of volunteers since WW2. Remember WW1 was also inspired by Clive Aslet’s book War Memorial, which tells the story of each person listed on one Devon village war memorial.

A recent letter of support from the Prime Minster said:

“There is …[an] important and fitting way we can pay tribute to that generation; by taking part in voluntary service. After all, self-sacrifice is a great tradition of this country. It makes a huge different to our communities. In giving up our own time, we can reflect upon just how much that generation gave up, nearly 100 years ago.

That is why this Government is supporting the Remember WW1 initiative. Remember WW1 will galvanise people to take part in active commemoration, so they too can make a difference to communities right across Britain. And I commend everyone who, this centenary, answers the call and does their bit for their local area.”
