JVN Hosts Internship Training Day

December 20, 2010

On Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 a very special event was organised by the Jewish Volunteering Network (JVN) in cooperation with TrainE-TraidE, the Pears Foundation and UJIA Adam Science Foundation at the Jewish Social Action Hub in West Hampstead.

The aim of this half day seminar was to help prepare interns currently working in Jewish organisations to apply to full time positions after their internship. 15 interns from organisations as diverse as Tzedek, UK Task Force, Mitzvah Day, UJIA, the Langdon Foundation and JVN attended.

(L-R) Myriam Ellison - JVN, Charlotte Newman - UK Task Force, Marc Tischler (hidden) - UJIA, Hadassah Wachsmann - Tzedek, Sophie Mindell - Mitzvah Day and Jessica Bohm - World Jewish Relief.

The morning started with an introduction about the UJIA Adam Science Leadership Programme by Matti Fruhman and was followed by the main presenter, Dalia Davis from TrainE-TraidE. She encouraged the interns to rewrite their personal statement on their CVs and to tailor applications according to specific job offers.

Amy Philip, Deputy Director at the Pears Foundation, spoke from the perspective of employers, having worked in HR for over 10 years. She told stories about interviews and of some unfortunate candidates who ruined theirs!!!

The event helped interns to be proactive, to keep on networking and to be aware of any job opportunities available, even those that are not publicly advertised! This is especially helpful in an economic situation where it is very difficult to find a first job for recent graduates.

The sponsoring organisations see this event as the launch of an ongoing Internship programme that networks interns across the community providing them with useful information and training. In the near future, other seminars tailored to interns will take place within the Jewish community.
